Driving a rugged SUV like the Toyota 4Runner or the Honda Pilot comes with certain expectations. One of them is that it will be able to reliably take you wherever you want to go, even if that’s the road less traveled.
When you’re looking for a vehicle as bold as you are, you’ll first need to know it was built to keep up with you. From camping at your favorite site to taking extreme off-roading adventures, the 4Runner is prepared with a standard ground clearance of nine inches and a maximum ground clearance of 9.6 inches.
The Pilot, on the other hand, can take you on some smaller treks, but you’ll be limited by just 7.3 inches of standard ground clearance and 8.3 inches of maximum ground clearance.
Additionally, these SUVs differ when it comes to their angles of approach and departure. The Toyota 4Runner provides:
Meanwhile, the Honda Pilot offers an approach angle of 18.3 degrees and a departure angle of 21.1 degrees
With a significantly smaller angle for both approach and departure, you may find your Pilot scraping against rocks and other obstacles on the ground. Meanwhile, the higher stance and angles of the 4Runner enable it to sail seamlessly above extrusions.
If you’re considering the Toyota 4Runner and the Honda Pilot, clearly, you’re not one to limit your travels to the asphalt. You’ll want to know your chosen vehicle has what it takes to head off the beaten path.
The excitement of the Toyota 4Runner doesn’t stop with its dimensions. Instead, it also offers part-time or full-time 4WD (4-wheel drive) to help you power through mud, sand, and anything else that may come your way. The Pilot, unfortunately, isn’t available with 4WD. You can upgrade to all-wheel drive, but this drivetrain isn’t as robust for off-road drives.
The 4Runner also offers available Multi-Terrain Select that automatically regulates wheelspin for optimized traction in a variety of conditions. The Pilot offers a similar system with various drive modes.
For the most extreme treks, opt for Crawl Control on the 4Runner. This system is like low-speed cruise control that modulates the throttle and brakes when off-roading, allowing you to devote your full attention to navigating around obstacles in your path.
The 4Runner’s available electronically controlled locking rear differential can also help maintain a controlled pace over obstacles. It distributes engine power evenly to both rear wheels, so they move at the same speed—even if one is off the ground.
Unfortunately, the Honda Pilot lacks similar features and therefore doesn’t offer this type of bold capability.
Clearly, these SUVs are ready for road trips or even a quick jaunt to your favorite hiking spot. With so much time spent behind the wheel, it’s important that you stay engaged throughout the journey.
Through the standard 8-inch touchscreen in the Toyota 4Runner and the 7-inch display in the Honda Pilot, you’ll be able to access a range of applications. Bluetooth®, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration come standard in both models, and you can plug your compatible device into the USB ports to access your favorite songs, podcasts, and audiobooks.
However, only the 4Runner offers the following as standard:
To access satellite radio or an in-vehicle hotspot in the Pilot will require an upgrade to a higher trim level. And, unfortunately, the Honda doesn’t offer Amazon Alexa on any of its trims.
When tuning in to your favorite music playlist, podcast, or audiobook, you’ll want to be able to be able to hear them clearly. The 4Runner comes standard with eight speakers, while the Pilot falls just short with seven.
No matter what you decide to listen to on your next getaway, it will sound crystal-clear and more refined through the available 15-speaker JBL® sound system in the 4Runner. The audio may not be as precise in the Pilot, though, since it maxes out at 12 speakers.
Ready to feel the wind in your hair on the open road? If so, then you’ll want to get behind the wheel of one of these rugged SUVs.
